Dull and Dry Skin

Dull skin

Dull skin can be caused by a combination of external and internal factors that affect the health and appearance of the skin. The most common causes are: Medical conditions, aging, pollution, and environmental exposure.

  • Not Exfoliating: Lack of exfoliation can cause a build-up of dead skin cells, making it look rough, dry, and lifeless. 
  • Dehydration: Lack of moisture can make your skin appear tight, flaky, and dull. Your appearance will seem less radiant and plump.
  • Sleep: Poor sleeping habits reduce circulation and collagen production. Remember, sleep is when your skin repairs and regenerates.

Dry skin

Dry skin happens when your skin doesn't maintain enough moisture. 

  • Environmental causes: Cold and dry weather, Cold weather, and low humidity can strip moisture from the skin.
  • Harsh soaps or detergents: Cleansers with strong surfactants can damage the skin barrier and wash away natural oils.
  • Sun exposure: Long exposure to UV radiation can damage and dry the skin over time.

Exfoliate

Exfoliate regularly: You need to remove the dead skin cells that can build up during the day, which makes your skin appear dull. You can do this 1-3 times a week, but don't overdo it since it can cause irritation and dryness.

  •  Physical exfoliants: Scrubs that contain fine particles
  • Chemical exfoliants: AHAs (lactic acid, glycolic)


Hydrate and Moisturise

Hydrated skin reflects light better and will make your skin look more plumper + radiant.

  • You can use hyaluronic acid serums for hydration
  • Use a good moisturiser daily, e.g, shea butter, ceramides, or glycerin.

Use Sunscreen Daily

Being exposed to UV radiation can damage the skin and make it appear older and duller.

  • Apply sunscreen, ideally SPF 30+, every day, even when it's cloudy.
  • Apply this every 2 hours when outside.

  • Eat food rich in antioxidants (berries, greens, veggies, and nuts)
  • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Having foods with omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, flaxseed) will help with skin barrier support.

Moisture Consistently

Apply moisturiser after showering or washing your face to lock in moisture.

  • Humectants: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin
  • Emollients: Squalane, shea butter
  • Face 2x daily (morning and night)


Avoid Over Exfoliating

Dry skin can often be more sensitive.

Therefore, use chemical gentle exfoliants like lactic acid instead of a harsh scrub.
