Hyperpigmentation

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition where parts of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, is produced and deposited in the skin. Areas anywhere on the body.

Different types of Hyperpigmentation

  • Melasma – Often symmetrical, brown patches, especially on the face.
  • Sunspots (Lentigines) – Flat, dark spots caused by sun damage.
  • PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) – Dark marks left after skin injury or inflammation.

Causes of Hyperpigmentation

  • Sun Exposure – UV rays stimulate melanin production, leading to sunspots or age spots.
  • Inflammation – Skin trauma or inflammation (like acne, eczema, or cuts) can leave behind dark marks after healing, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
  • Medical Conditions – Addison’s disease and other endocrine conditions may lead to skin darkening.
  • Hormonal Changes – Conditions like melasma, often triggered by pregnancy or birth control, cause brown or gray-brown patches, particularly on the face.

Tips for Treating Hyperpigmentation

  • Laser Therapy – Targets melanin deposits in the skin.

  • Sun Protection – Daily use of broad-spectrum SPF is essential to prevent worsening.

  • Topical Treatments – Products with ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, azelaic acid, kojic acid, or vitamin C.

  • Chemical Peels – Helps remove the outer pigmented layers.
